If you are a carer who looks after a family member, partner or friend in need of help because they are ill, frail, suffer from memory loss or have dementia, a disability, mental health problem or an alcohol or substance misuse problem there are courses and programmes to help.
Kirklees Council offer the following courses:
Looking after me programme
Looking after me is a course for adults who care for someone living with a long-term health condition or disability. It is about carers making time to look after their own health needs and aims to help them to take more control of their situation and make a difference to their life. The course covers:
- relaxation techniques
- cognitive techniques
- coping with difficult emotions
- managing depression
- problem solving
- healthy eating
- fitness and exercise
- communication skills
- better breathing
- working with your healthcare professional
Presented in an informal group setting of up to 15 carers the course consists of 7 weekly sessions which last approximately 2.5 hours and run throughout the year across Kirklees. On completion of the course you are able to attend a monthly support group.

Carer journey sessions
Alongside the successful looking after me course, they now have three additional carer journey sessions to support you in your caring role. These sessions aim to provide you with information and support to help you improve your emotional and physical well-being.
