Kirklees Deaf Children’s Society – Odeon Pizza Hut event 5th Feb 2016

This event gives deaf & young people in school years 5 and upwards a chance to meet with other young people.  The event is on Friday 5th February from 5.30 to 7.00pm and includes free pizza and drink.

Parents can pop next door to Costa to chat with other parents of deaf children, and relax over a cup of coffee.  The KDCS committee will ensure that every child is happy, included & safe.

February 2016 Half Term ‘WACKY’ activities for young people with a disability aged 13 – 25yrs

Winter WACKY offers a packed programme of activities for young people with disabilities aged 13 – 25 to take part in over February half term.

Projects will be based at The DofE Marina Project Shepley Bridge Marina Huddersfield Road Mirfield WF14 9HR.

Activities will run from Tuesday 16th – Friday 19th February from 10.30 – 3.30 daily.

Activities to choose from include:

  • Arts & crafts
  • Circus skills
  • Music, DJ’ing & photography
  • Canoeing, cycling, fishin & archer
  • Pampering sessions
  • See the attached document below for details of further activities.

Please go dressed for the season with warm clothes, suitable footwear and a waterproof jacket. To get a flavor of last year’s WACKY watch the film on www.kirkleesdofe.org.

WACKY is an activity programme that welcomes all young people with a disability however they do not have staff to provide one to one or two to one support. they encourage you to come along with your personal assistant/carer if required.

Northern Ballet – dance course for people with learning disabilities

Ability is a weekly dance course specifically created for people with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Through day long sessions the course will enable people to train, create and perform alongside professional dancers in state of the art studios in Quarry Hill.

The course aims to:

  • Improve participants health and fitness
  • Develop communication and social interaction skills
  • Raise self-esteem and develop a sense of achievement
  • Enable participants’ creativity and expression

‘My health tools’ launched

My Health Tools is an interactive website designed for people living with long-term conditions in Kirklees.

Developed by Kirklees Council, NHS Greater Huddersfield CCG and NHS North Kirklees CCG, the site is designed to help people manage long-term conditions and improve their health and wellbeing.

Users are taken on a guided journey to identify their personal health needs and provided with support to help them manage and monitor their condition.

Initially focusing on pain, breathing problems and anxiety, the site will develop over time to include a range of topics and health conditions. My Health Tools is easy to use, open to anyone who feels they would benefit and can be found here www.myhealthtools.uk

Introduction to I.T. courses at Dewsbury Electronic Village Hall

Dewsbury electronic village hall will be starting 2 new Intro to IT courses in January 2016. These courses cover basic Internet, Email and Microsoft Word.

The first sessions will take place on:

Tuesday 12th January 10.00am – 1.15pm

Thursday 14th January 1.00pm – 4.15pm

Service users and carers can engage in CQC inspection of South West Yorkshire NHS Trust

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is going to be inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in March 2016. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

This will be their first comprehensive inspection, which means the CQC will be inspecting their services over a whole week. The inspection team will be looking at the safety and quality of the care that the Trust provides.

The Trust has decided to hold some events to help explain the purpose of the inspection, what this might mean for the services you access and how service users and carers can engage with the inspection team.

The events will be held at the following locations:

  • 28th Jan – Room 39, Folly Hall, Huddersfield  – 2pm to 3.30pm
  •  10th Feb –Boardroom, Kendray Hospital, Barnsley – 10.30am to 12noon.

Travelling expenses will be paid by cash on the day by completing a travel expenses claim form.

North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group – updates from Winter 2015 Newsletter

North Kirklees CCG Winter 2015 newsletter is out.  Some of the key points highlighted are:

Care closer to home Earlier this year they awarded a contract for a range of community-based services to Locala Community Partnerships. Over the past few months, Locala has been working with their staff, patients, GPs and others to implement their new model of care across Kirklees.

Get Yourself Active Consultation

Get Yourself Active is a Sport England funded project led by Disability Rights UK. They want to find out from people with lived experience of disability, health conditions and mental health issues about their experiences of taking part in physical activity and sport in their local area.

Get Yourself Active would like to reach as many people as possible and are interested in getting a national picture of the challenges that people have in accessing physical activity and whether people are using personal budgets for this.

The Safe Places scheme is to help vulnerable people when they go out. Sometimes when they go out things can happen and they need help but there is no one around to ask. They might have lost their bus pass or someone has been unkind and they feel upset and afraid. A Safe Place is somewhere they can go to for help if this ever happens.
