Parent participation – your opinions matter
As parents and carers we want our children to have the best possible quality of life. We work hard to seek support, education and opportunities that will enable them to develop to the best of their abilities, achieve their goals and lead happy and fulfilling lives.
We are our children’s biggest supporters and most trusted advocates, so it is important that our voices are heard.
What is parent participation?
This sees PCAN talking regularly to our members and working with service providers and policy makers, to ensure your opinions are raised and voices are heard. That way, you can help improve services for children and young people with additional needs, and shape policies so that they truly reflect users’ expectations and aspirations. You can see some examples of our work in our 2010/20/19 Annual General Meeting Report here.
How does parent participation work?
The Government, local authorities and service providers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of involving parents and carers in their work. But for them to listen to your thoughts and learn from your experiences, you must be given the opportunity to express your views at the right time and in the right way.
PCAN therefore works in partnership with local service providers, championing the voice of Kirklees parents and carers of children with additional needs. We keep abreast of policy changes, legislative developments and local service reviews that could affect the care and support provided to your child. We keep you informed of these via our website, social media and newsletters, and promote relevant surveys or hold meetings and consultations, so you can share your views. We strive to ensure that service providers carry out a good standard of participation with the people that really matter – YOU!
How can you get involved?
All PCAN members are kept informed about upcoming policy or service changes and the opportunity to shape developments. Our participation activities also give you the chance to discuss your opinions/issues with other parents who appreciate the situation you find yourself in.
Simply look out for news of upcoming consultations and surveys, and take part. PCAN will support you through the process, answering any questions you may have. Or, if you are interested in sharing your opinions but have some reservations about getting involved, talk to us about your concerns – we are here to help. Tel: 07754102336
A collective voice will magnify the influence that we can have.
